We have had no end of colds since the beginning of the year, I blame school. I’m sure winters were never this full of runny noses and chesty coughs before Betsy started there. But what can you do to help relieve the illness? Here are the things we do at home:

Cuddle up. Get the blankets out and snuggle up on the sofa. Keep warm and comfortable and have Cbeebies on in the background. Have a nap.

Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water, maybe a bit of squash. Let off the dairy a bit as that can thicken mucus (ick).

Feed a cold. I make a ruddy good soup. It’s warm, it’s comforting and it’s full of good things to eat. Plus it’s easy to make too – sweat off chopped onions, garlic and carrot in a bit of oil, when soft add some turmeric, ground coriander and a pinch of chilli flakes. Add chicken stock and bits of any veg you have, dark green leaves are the best. Simmer until cooked and blitz. Serve in a mug for added coziness.

Dose up on meds; paracetamol is good and Vicks VapoRub is brilliant for these situations. I remember having that rub when I was ill as a child and now my two have it now as well. There’s a reason it has been around for so long – it works. It makes breathing so much easier especially at night. Plus the smell of it is ruddy great.

Keep them entertained
(a little. Nothing too strenuous!). Work though a sticker book, play with little toys like finger puppets or maybe play a game together on your tablet. Maybe even do a couple of magic tricks to distract them?

What do you do to help your kiddos when they’re full of cold?

This post is an entry for the #VicksTricks campaign.

  1. Some great tips! This winter has been a bad one for colds. I feel like we’ve all had a permanent cold for the last 4 weeks. This is the first week I haven’t been wiping my daughter’s nose every 2 mins, or coughing continuously myself. We swear by vaporub now. And paracetamol is actually incredibly helpful so I have calpol to hand at all times. #MarvMondays
