It’s summer I think? It’s not really feeling like it at the moment round here, but I’m sure that will change (for a start, none of my friends got Glastonbury tickets so it’s BOUND to be beautiful that weekend).
Anyway, the summer holidays are just around the corner and here’s a few frugal ideas to keep everyone entertained:
Make ice cream – we have a maker but hardly use it for shame. This summer I intend to make lots (and sorbets too) and the recipes from the current Caboodle mag look delicious. Once we’ve made ice cream, we can…
Bake cookies and then we can ensemble ice cream sandwiches. I have never eaten an ice cream sandwich, I intend to change this.
Go Promming. The BBC Proms are held every year at the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington and if you queue up on the day for tickets, you could be seeing works class musicians perform for £6 by watching them in the standing area in front of the stage. Bargain! We are going to or first ever prom this year, the Cbeebies Prom and I couldn’t be more excited!
Pick Your Own. I think this was on last year’s list too, and for good reason! Finding a pick your own farm is a true pleasure. There is nothing like waking though fields with arms full of ripe, juicy fruit and your head full of ideas with what to do with it all.
Sleep under the stars
Picnic in a meadow
Get the bikes out and go for a cycle
Explore a park you’ve not visited before I still haven’t taken the kids to Kensington Gardens’ amazing children’s play area and Crystal Palace park is on the list to visit too.
Visit some lavender fields Because you get to take amazing photos like this.
Sit around a fire (a campfire, not a burning house, obv)
Go down a slide The slide that curves its way around the Orbit in the Olympic Park opens this summer. It’s not going to be cheap, but I’m pretty sure will be awesome.
Hold Your Own Olympics Get a group together in a park, have lots of different races and give out medals at the end. I know Betsy is going to be super inspired by the actual Olympics in TV so this would be a nice accompaniment.
Get on the water Take a ferry somewhere, row a boat on a lake, go white water rafting.
Post something. Send some happy mail to someone you love.
Stargaze. Watch the Perseids meteor shower in early August.
Press some flowers and make a picture with them
Go Potter mad. Incase you’ve been living under a rock these past few months, the new Harry Potter story opens in the West End later this month. Tickets have sold out, but I’m still getting excited about it. Just look at Malfoy’s evil goatee! You can pre-order the script and if you’re in London, you can see an exhibition of some of the graphic designs featured in the HP films at House of Minalima in Greek Street, Soho.
See the sea
Celebrate Midsummer and Lammas
Eat fish and chips in the park This is one of our favourite activities, taking advantage of our local park’s late opening times in summer, buying fish and chips for summer and having an evening picnic. Bliss.
Get lost Look at a map of your local area, note places you’ve not been and explore the new area. Research interesting cafes in the area to have a refreshing break while you’re there.
Well I hope that gives you a few ideas! What are you up to this summer?
